We can’t come to the season of advent without dealing with the idea of “divine love.”  In fact, if we were to distill down everything associated with advent we could encapsulate the entire meaning of the season into this one word, Love!  We are born from God’s love.  We move and breathe and have our being only through our Creator’s love for us.  This overwhelming, soul-capturing emotion drips from every pore of heaven and desires to fill our lives with the fragrance of God.

The thought of this love is staggering.  How can one possibly describe it and do it justice?  One word – Jesus!  Yes, the old joke that the answer to every question asked in Sunday School is “Jesus” is correct.

The coming of Christ helps us properly frame – at least for our finite minds – this amazing love our Lord has for us.

The proof of it – Heaven came down!

The depth of it – God the Son was born to die – for us.

We say things like: “I love chocolate” or “I love my pastor’s singing voice.”  How easily we use the word, but when expressed by our Creator the word “love” carries with it an overabundance of meaning.  Not the least of which is heaven giving up it’s best – Immanuel God with us!  Only this sacrifice makes our way to life possible.

“For God so loved the world . . .”
